Its seems that few people know that the lovely pearls people wear were made by a livng creature with hard work and dedication and at least 10 years for the whole process!

The Process Pearl Farmers in Asia harvest their pearls by implanting a nuisance or piece of shell called Mother of Pearl. Thus the irritant cause the oyster to react and add more nacre to the foreign invader. The longer the Pearl Farmer leaves it the better chances of getting a huge pearl! A gem in its own nature. You have to remember that it's animal inside the oyster making this pearl of true beauty

Firstly, pearl farmer must harvest an oyster and wait at least 3 years to mature BEFORE an irritant is inserted to produce the pearl.

Secondly, once maturity reaches pearl farmer insert an irritant. This takes another 3-5 years for a pearl to grow. As the oyster grows in size, its shell must also grow. The mantle is an organ that produces the oyster's shell, using minerals from the oyster's food. The material created by the mantle is called nacre. Nacre lines the inside of the shell.

Thirdly, this doesn't include the diseases, water temperature changes, death, rejection of foreign object insert, and other of mother nature's or human's own doing all will determine its vital survival in the pearl harvest.

Fourthly, after caring, watching, and waiting patiently for 5-10 years ONLY 40-50% of all oysters will survive.

Fifth, approximalety only 5% of high quality pearls will have a gem like quality value to it. Thats not very high just to maintain the survival of the oysters. Its not fun, but as a pearl jewelry expert working for vistapearls.com its quite heavy work.

Not written by expert as claimed. Shows almost no knowledge of the process. Shell is not used in FW, 5% is a gross overestimation, mussels are used - not oysters in fw. I would strongly recommend agaist using this artilce as any means of reference.
